Stumps near fences, foundations, and driveways are among the most common scenarios contractors handle. The good news: they're usually doable. Here's what changes when the stump is in a tight spot.
Stump Within 2 Feet of a Fence
This is the most common tight-access scenario. A professional contractor will:
- Use a narrower cutting head or different equipment orientation to avoid hitting the fence
- Grind from the far side of the stump toward the fence rather than directly at it
- Leave the 1–2 inches of stump closest to the fence unground, or use a hand tool to finish that section
The result is still a clean, below-grade grind. The fence doesn't need to be removed in most cases. If the stump is literally touching the fence post, grinding may require removing a fence panel temporarily—the contractor should communicate this upfront.
Stump Within 3 Feet of the Foundation
Stumps close to the house foundation need careful handling:
- The contractor will avoid directing the cutting wheel toward the foundation
- Depth grinding may be shallower on the foundation side (4–6 inches vs. the standard 6–12 inches)
- Protective plywood or rubber matting is often placed against the foundation to catch debris
- Large roots running under the foundation will not be touched—they're better left to decay naturally than disturbed
Stump Next to a Driveway or Patio
Concrete and pavers can be damaged by flying debris and vibration. Contractors should:
- Place rubber mats or plywood barriers between the stump and hardscape
- Avoid positioning the machine so that debris ejects toward concrete
- Work at reduced speed on the side nearest the hardscape
When Equipment Can't Access the Stump
Very tight spaces—under a deck, inside a retaining wall, or accessible only through a 24-inch gate—may require:
- Small handheld or mini track grinders (slower but fits anywhere)
- Removal of a fence panel for access (typically a small extra charge)
- Manual excavation rather than grinding (significantly more expensive)
Cost Impact
Tight-access grinding typically adds $50–$150 to the base price to account for slower work, equipment adjustment, and additional care. When getting a quote, always mention if your stump is near a structure—it's better to have this factored into the price upfront.
